A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
